چکیده

A central issue in the study of organizations relates to the explanation of the genesis of organizational diversity. In this context, niche-width theory deals with the consequences for organizational form survival of intertemporal selection processes in industries that feature environmental variation over time. Drawing from evolutionary biology, the theory links environmental change patterns to fitting organizational forms, distinguishing three major types: generalists, polymorphists and specialists. To date, empirical work on niche-width theory has been very scarce, particularly in as far as the polymorphist form is concerned. This paper offers an in-depth test of niche-width theory in the UK motorcycle industry from 1895 to 1993. Theoretically, we extend niche-width theory by developing a fine-grained typology of the polymorphist form, adding beachhead and bridge polymorphist strategies next to the overall polymorphist form. Additionally, we argue that the ecological niche-width study of organizational forms is incomplete without a fine-grained theory of the consequences of different cost structures. Adding such a cost theory nicely links niche-width theory to the resource-partitioning argument. Finally, as high-calibre longitudinal cost data are rarely available, we suggest the empirical tool of the so-called revealed cost structure methodology. By and large, the empirical analyses provide support for our extended niche-width theory argument.

Metabolic Flexibility as a Major Predictor of Spatial Distribution in Microbial Communities

A better understand the ecology of microbes and their role in the global ecosystem could be achieved if traditional ecological theories can be applied to microbes. In ecology organisms are defined as specialists or generalists according to the breadth of their niche. Spatial distribution is often used as a proxy measure of niche breadth; generalists have broad niches and a wide spatial distribu...

Explaining abundance-occupancy relationships in specialists and generalists: a case study on aquatic macroinvertebrates in standing waters.

1. A positive interspecific abundance-occupancy relationship is one of the most robust patterns in macroecology. Yet, the mechanisms driving this pattern are poorly understood. Here, we use biological traits of freshwater macroinvertebrates to gain a mechanistic understanding and disentangle the various explanations. We ask whether mechanisms underlying the abundance-occupancy relationship diff...

Estimating Niche Width Using Stable Isotopes in the Face of Habitat Variability: A Modelling Case Study in the Marine Environment

Distributions of stable isotopes have been used to infer an organism's trophic niche width, the 'isotopic niche', and examine resource partitioning. Spatial variation in the isotopic composition of prey may however confound the interpretation of isotopic signatures especially when foragers exploit resources across numerous locations. In this study the isotopic compositions from marine assemblag...

Reconsidering the Specialist-Generalist Paradigm in Niche Breadth Dynamics: Resource Gradient Selection by Canada Lynx and Bobcat

The long-standing view in ecology is that disparity in overall resource selection is the basis for identifying niche breadth patterns, with species having narrow selection being classified "specialists" and those with broader selection being "generalists". The standard model of niche breadth characterizes generalists and specialists as having comparable levels of overall total resource exploita...

The Ecology of Strategic Positioning: Mutualism, Competition and Inertia

We develop an ecological theory of the strategic positioning of all firms in an organizational population across its evolution. Drawing on established ecological theories and notions of strategic positioning from the management literature, we contend that processes of mutualism, competition, and inertia shape the propensity of firms to move in the market space. Accordingly, we derive hypotheses...
